Malibu Coast Sauvignon Blanc, Eds' Vineyard

General Characteristics of Sauvignon Blanc

Our Sauvignon Blanc is a medium-bodied wine. As a dry wine, the full flavor of our Sauvignon Blanc does not have any residual sugar.. Notes of gooseberry, grapefruit, and pineapple shine through with each sip. While subtle, you’ll taste hints of white flowers and green peppers in our wine. Pyrazines, the chemical compound best associated with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, is what gives off green notes such as bell peppers, jalapeno and even grass. When you sample it, whether you purchase a bottle of this wine or\, you notice it’s smooth with a beautiful, vibrant, citrusy zest.

Sauvignon Blanc is a grape that retains acidity, so wine has a lovely tartness. The terroir of the Malibu Wine Country peeks through at each sip’s conclusion offering a refreshing mineral complex that is not overbearing.

While we grow these green grapes at our vineyard in the Santa Monica Mountains off the Pacific Coast Highway, this variety originated in France’s Bordeaux region. Just like Bordeaux, the California Coast offers the maritime climate and continental climates, allowing for this grape to grow very well.

What Makes AJA Vineyards' Sauvignon Blanc Special

At AJA, we pay our homage to the French region of Pouilly-Fume, and the Grandfather of Napa Valley wines, Robert Mondavi with our “Fume Blanc” style Sauvignon Blanc. Robert Mondavi coined this term when he created Napa Valley Sauvignon Blancs and aged them in oak barrels. We take it one step further, though, and we perform two months of the fermentation process in steel tanks and four months in neutral oak barrels, where it ages. This includes minimal lees stirring to develop the texture and aroma of the wine.

Because our wines don’t undergo malolactic fermentation, we find it helps preserve the freshness of the fruit and allows for that flavor to stand out. Malolactic fermentation is a process that converts malic acid — a tart acid — into lactic acid. The lactic acid makes the wine creamier and softer. All of our red wines undergo this process.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine deemed our Eds’ Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc a 2022 Editor’s Choice wine. We are so proud to share this wine, named after the grandfathers of our Proprietor, Amanda, with all of you.

We ship this wine to countless states across the country, and if you sign up for our wine club, you can get this wine at 15% off! It’s almost sold out and won’t be available until next Spring! 2021 Malibu Coast Sauvignon Blanc, Eds' Vineyard

Winemaker’s Notes

Our estate is excited to introduce our Sauvignon Blanc from Eds’ Vineyard. This unique wine is beautifully complex. Notes of pineapple, grapefruit and gooseberry on the nose. Hints of fresh green pepper and white flowers join in. On the palate, it has a bright but soft touch, silky and dry. Minerality shows through and the beautiful terroir of Malibu settles as you finish.

We aged this wine in neutral oak vessels after being fermented in a steel tank. This allowed the wine to breath and develop a soft structure and weighted palate. We made this wine in the eyes of the original California Sauvignon Blanc (the Fumé blanc) coined by famed Robert Mondavi. The bright fruit and zest balanced by a soft and smooth finish, makes this the perfect pairing for a day at the beach in Malibu, and a summer salad on the side.

This wine is named after Todd and Heather’s fathers Edward and Edwin, my Grandfathers. Two truly remarkable men with a zest for life. Edward passed away in 2014 but we know he’s smiling down on these wines. We are fortunate to be able to share this wine with Edwin. Depicted on the label is a topographic map of Eds’ Vineyard and its coordinates. This is a constant reminder of my Grandfathers’ love for travel. We hope you enjoy this unique and beautiful wine.
