Grapes and Wines Grown in the Malibu Coast
The Malibu Coast in Southern California is a relatively newer American Viticulture Area. It spans across the Transverse Mountain range starting just northwest of Los Angeles traveling through the city and culminating in Santa Monica. With a climate similar to that of the Mediterranean ecosystem, the Malibu Coast AVA parallels some of the finest wine growing climate in the world.
Although it is one of the newer AVAs in the United States, having become an official AVA in July 2013, the Malibu Coast area is already renowned for its viticulture and farm culture. Some of the most talked-about grape varieties from this area are Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
How Does the Malibu Coast AVA Soil and Climate Contribute to the Winemaking Process?
Thanks to the rain shadow effect and the volcanic and mineral composition of the soil, the Malibu Coast AVA has the perfect conditions for grapes to grow. This AVA is home to several microclimates. The microclimates allow for pockets of the region to be best suited for all different grape varieties.
